n greetings or goodbyes, Aloha translates to the presence of life. Alo=presence. Hā=breath. And it means much more, with layers of interpretation adding to the positive spirit of energy exchanged with others. Born and bred on Oahu, Tommy Kim is more than familiar with the idea, and the feeling. As a lifelong entrepreneur, a former athlete and for nearly the past decade, a real estate agent—he's practiced it his whole life. "I'm working across all the different time zones," he says good-naturedly, "but I wouldn't have it any other way." „e agent's clients span those in Hawaii and the mainland as well as those in Asia, where particularly high net-worth families in Korea and Taiwan are a unique niche. From the start, Kim's business has been built by one relationship linking to the next, with him thoroughly enjoying the relationship and service aspects of real estate. "I like connecting good people with one another," he explains. "It makes the world smaller." It makes sense how individuals would be drawn to Kim's mix of relaxed affability and do-or-die service standard, formed while growing up in his family's business, followed by years in the pro golf world. While the first was a circumstance of birth—his family was the first importer of Häagen-Dazs into Hawaii—his golf career came about as a fluke. Urged by his father to take up golf, a then- teenage Kim was dutifully being fitted for clubs by a visiting national Titleist rep who, impressed by his swing speeds, encouraged him to pursue the sport in earnest. Kim did, and cinched the state championship for the next two years. He moved to the main- land where he could compete in more events and, while still an amateur, qualified for the Sony Open in 2001. He lived in Las Vegas and San Diego where, for years, golf was his world. Family (his wife is also from Hawaii) and a desire for change brought him back to Oahu.
