What was your original vision for the project? My original vision on this house was a Hampton's style Cape Cod home with a lot of detail both inside and out. It was an attempt to help me understand and balance out how much architectural detail my clients expected and how laid-back I could be in our design. What inspired your architectural design for the project? My goal was to design a home that would reflect the Southern California lifestyle. The diversity of its people, food, lifestyles and ideas are reflected in the wide array of architectural styles present in the [region's] communities. I wanted to capture that notion of diversity in the home by blending horizontal and vertical siding and diversifying textures and materials. The finished project has both elegant and exquisite curb appeal yet also welcomes the laid-back beach cottage lifestyle. How, specifically, did you integrate these design aspects into the home? I used white horizontal red wood siding to integrate a relaxed beach bungalow atmosphere into the rear of the home. The living, dining and kitchen areas are open spaces that lend to a comfortable coastal lifestyle that welcomes interaction amongst friends and family. Retractable doors allow for a spectacular integration between outdoor living areas and common areas of the home, all with a dynamic ocean view. Its exterior appeal invites the eye to the warm modernity of a Southern California beach cottage bungalow, while the interiors display crisp, horizontal lines and moldings that exuberantly blend the sophistication with the laid-back coastal lifestyle. Are there any unique features of the project that you would like to highlight? The design of the Mesa Grande House was a challenge since it's located in an area where neighbors protect their views of the coastline. I played with the roof layout and the articulation of the building to preserve and respect the neighbors' ocean views and to navigate through tough city regulations. I reconfigured the interior space within the existing shell of the original home and created accents such as decks, porches and bay windows to give the house a more updated look. What has been the most rewarding part of working on this project? Seeing how the talent and creative minds of our design team all come together to create a home that catches the eye of passersby. Every project poses a challenge and those challenges mature us as designers, entrepreneurs and as people. 9,900 square foot lot, 3,700 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 3 baths State-of-the-art home theater system, playroom with a pool table and mini bar, and retractable doors that open to a beautiful view of the coast T H E M E S A G R A N D E H O U S E (Past Project) Hernandezign When Miguel Hernandez, founder of Hernandezign, was asked to remodel a home in the Hollywood Riviera that incorporated a relaxed, Southern California lifestyle aesthetic into its design, he immediately took to the drawing boards. A little more than a year- and-a-half later, the home, named The Mesa Grande House, was complete. The result was a relaxed yet sophisticated dwelling that reflected the diversity and wide range of architectural styles found in Southern California's coastal communities.
