2729 Via Oleadas A Blufftop Estate in Palos Verdes Estates Occupies a World of Its Own While Overlooking An Epic Stretch of California Coastline

Oleadas translates from Spanish to big waves—and when relaxing along 2729 Via Oleadas’ expansive private terrace overlooking the Pacific Ocean, you realize it’s a perfect name for the street it’s located on. And it’s no ordinary street in Palos Verdes. Via Oleadas is a pretty sidebar off Paseo del Mar, which is arguably one of the most beautiful streets in the nation, and certainly one of the most impressive, with oceanfront estates framed by tall, wafting palm trees.

“This estate is located on a very private cul-de-sac in Lunada Bay, in a prestigious enclave known as Resort Point,” says real estate agent Chris Adlam of Vista Sothbey’s International Realty about 2729 Via Oleadas.

But it’s the eye-popping views of the Pacific Ocean that ultimately make the location so special. Located on a bluff, you watch birds soar over sea cliffs, shaped by time, while waves crash over rocky shores.

There’s a kaleidoscope of such sights, and a color scheme to match. A soft glow of light sets over vast sheets of blue water in the morning, and by the end of day the color-soaked hues of sunset streak over the whole of the elegant seascape.

Such nature and views take center stage at this villa with 5 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms, spanning approximately 11,810 square feet of living space on a lot of nearly 1 acre. It’s a place that was built to meet the grandeur of its site in Palos Verdes Estates.

“It has exceptional construction and numerous amenities,” says Adlam of the property, which lives like a private luxury resort, down to its 9-car garage.

The wine cellar, for instance, has rows of gleaming black wood cabinetry with storage for hundreds of bottles—a stock that comes in handy when hosting a soirée in any of the grand spaces in the floorplan. One of them is a sprawling social hub where guests gather under elaborate coffered ceilings, chatting by the fire or congregating at the bar.

Elsewhere, there’s a roomy gym with a sauna and a manicured green yard where you refine your putt on a 6-hole green while overlooking the ocean.

A stately office, clad in rich-hued wood panels and an inlaid coffered ceiling, is a peaceful place to tuck away and think while flames flicker in the ornate fireplace. Such classical, elaborate spaces are a trademark of 2729 Via Oleadas. Everywhere you look there are soaring ceilings and towering fireplaces with intricately carved mantels. Gleaming floors with inlaid stone patterns, and sturdy pillars mingling with Gothic archways.

At the same time, mindful of its environment, such spaces connect organically with the enchanting outdoors via a well-placed stock of sliding walls and oversized glass windows and doors. Stepping out onto the smooth, sand-hued stone that covers the sprawling oceanfront patio, a grand scene unfolds: The blue of the saltwater infinity pool meets with the Pacific Ocean, heightened by lushly green, old-growth trees and a vivid, purple and gold sky.

It’s a bold scene that is sweeping and cinematic—and bound to never get old, whether gazing at the flames in the outdoor fireplace or soaking in the warmth of the spa while watching Lunada Bay surfers glide towards the shore.

“The house has panoramic ocean and coastline views,” explains Adlam, “and overlooks one of the most legendary big-wave surf spots in Southern California.”

Keeping with the secluded, resort feel of the property, there are four lush bedroom suites, including a primary suite that occupies a wing of its own. Here, an airy sitting room is where you can relax overlooking the ocean—and there’s a sunlit hideaway of a bathroom with a deep soaking tub and an elaborately painted ceiling.

Dramatically, the bedroom itself is exposed to ocean air and an elaborate coastal scene, palm-dotted cliffs included, when full-scale glass walls slide away, and graceful French doors reveal the balcony. After dark the atmosphere is magical, heightened by the suite’s roaring fireplace and the glittering lights of the coastline.

The size of the residence allows for a floorplan that caters to many moods. There are cozy gathering spots, like the bright kitchen where the sun pours through skylights in the vaulted ceiling. Quiet places, like a glass-encased hallway that crosses over a pond filled with colorful swimming koi. And an endless number of places to entertain, both indoors and along the landscaped grounds.

This gated and fully shrouded estate offers a private realm of its own, but stepping out for a walk is lovely, too. There are winding trails along nearby bluffs and an inviting greenbelt for leisurely dog walking and jogging. You can take bike rides along the broad, quiet streets with ease; or drive to mellow shops and sidewalk eateries, less than 5 minutes away.

But any guest, or member of the household coming home on a random day, probably won’t help but be struck by the 2729 Via Oleadas’ entry sequence. It’s a grand, landscaped walkway where you pass by a series of imposing arches, supported by a colonnade of columns. It signals a retreat from the daily business of life, and a welcome immersion into a different world, where you are surrounded equally by grandeur and bold nature.
