RK1 LIVING HOMES
Inside and out, it can be difficult to believe that the RK1 is prefabricated. Named for its designer, architectural
legend Ray Kappe, RK1 was created with urban infill in mind.
The dwellings feature roof decks, terraces, and balconies, and their large glass panel windows let in an
abundance of natural light. Within the walls are four to five bedrooms and 2.5 to 3.5 bathrooms. Even the
smallest version of the home comes in at a respectable 2,560 square feet, plus 1,435 in decking.
Just as inspiring as the home's design is its minimal environmental impact. Eco friendly materials are
incorporated throughout, a solar photovoltaic system helps power the house, and a greywater system
recycles water for landscape irrigation.
The first of its kind was constructed in Santa Monica in just 8.5 hours and earned the first ever LEED
Platinum certification.
